UWA, Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Josef train the lawyers of tomorrow

Students at the University of Western Australia Law School are receiving cutting-edge legal technology education and gaining real-life experience thanks to a recent collaboration between UWA, Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Josef

The 6-week pop-up program teaches UWA students about legal design thinking, project management, application building and more.

Putting theory into practice, students are building tools grounded in real-life use-cases provided by Corrs. This pop-up program is the first of its kind for WA, bridging the gap between the classroom and how the legal profession use legal technology in practice. Corrs mentors will help students bring ideas to life, ultimately building legal automation tools for the firm and its clients.

Deputy Head of School (Learning and Teaching) and Director of Applied Innovation Kate Offer leads the Law School’s commitment to technological innovation.

“We want our students to be the leaders of the future, whether they end up in law or in other professions. As educators, it’s our responsibility to equip them with the tools they’ll need to succeed in an increasingly digitised world.”

“Automation allows lawyers to do more with less. It’s a smarter way to work. Thanks to our collaboration with Corrs and Josef, UWA Law students are getting a head start in becoming the most technologically adept law graduates out there.”

Corrs partner Robert Franklyn echoes Kate’s sentiments, highlighting how important such partnerships can be for fostering the talent of tomorrow.

“Technology is changing the way we practice law and transforming how our clients run their businesses. It’s clear that an understanding of technology is a core skill for commercial lawyers.

For Franklyn, implementing Josef’s simple no-code automation platform puts UWA at the forefront of legal education in Australia.

“Josef provides the spark and foundations to streamline what we do as lawyers. The course has been something new and innovative for today’s students and further positions UWA as the go-to university for those looking to understand the importance of technology in law.”

Sam Flynn, COO and Co-founder of Josef, says of the program: “We’re really proud to be partnering with leaders of the legal profession such as UWA Law School and Corrs to deliver this really practical and hands-on course. Industry partnerships like this are essential to equipping law students with practical skills, something that employers and students alike are crying out for.”

Law students are getting ahead of the curve. You can too.
