“Our stakeholders are very tech-savvy. Outside of work, they're used to accessing information in real-time, so with AI and our other automation projects, we try to replicate this in a professional setting.”– Nicola Packer, General Counsel, Fnatic

Nicola’s in-house team has truly walked the walk when it comes to legal automation and AI.
Fnatic first used Josef to automate dozens of contracts and agreements, ultimately saving the team one day a week. Then, in early 2023, they adopted Josef Q, going on to achieve what many businesses are still exploring today:
They’ve gone the whole nine yards!
In conversation with Josef Co-founder and COO Sam Flynn, Nicola shares how her team has navigated all of the above and more. Watch the full interview above for the details, or read our recap below.
When first starting out with legaltech, increased productivity, quality control, and streamlined workflows sat at the top of the list for the Fnatic team.
“We were looking to optimize the team’s productivity and also improve our interactions with our stakeholders,” Nicola says.
“We started by streamlining the way that we receive instructions, whether that be through standardized forms, using basic Kanban boards to manage legal requests and update stakeholders, and so on.”
Most recently with Josef Q, “we’ve built tools that run through large volumes of data, analyze it and retrieve information really quickly.” The tools answer questions on behalf of the legal team and they’re “just awesome,” Nicola says.
How did Fnatic get so far so quickly with legal AI? Nicola says that, “Starting out, we thought about:
“People don’t want to read policies, regulations, contracts, but they do need the information from them.”
To test Josef Q’s potential, Nicola’s team joined forces with departments from across the business.
“We made Josef Q a joint project with our People and Culture team, creating tools for a lot of people policies, as well as specific areas that Legal deals with. Documentation like player handbooks or our sponsorship contracts where we receive a higher volume of repetitive questions from our business partners.”
“It’s very easy to just do things the way we’ve done before, but I think we always need to be thinking about what really works for us now. ‘What’s the best way to do it? What can we always do better?’.”
“Our stakeholders are very tech-savvy. Outside of work, they're used to accessing information in real-time, so with AI and our other automation projects, we try to replicate this in a professional setting.”– Nicola Packer, General Counsel, Fnatic
“Our stakeholders are very tech-savvy,” Nicola says. “Outside of work, they’re used to accessing information in real-time, so with AI and our other automation projects, we try to replicate this in a professional setting.”
“My team is also a really valuable resource,” Nicola adds. “I want to use their intellect and experience in the right way. I don’t want them to be demotivated by repetitive work. Plus, tech like Josef Q inspires them to think differently.”
Nicola explains, “AI tools or other automation allow us to empower the business with improved visibility over FAQs, matters, requests, etc. And time-wise, they allow my team to focus on interpretation, risk analysis, and more strategic matters rather than just telling people what a document says and answering those same questions repeatedly.”
“Hooking Josef Q up to Slack really changed the game for us,” Nicola shares. “It’s helped us meet the business where they work and give our clients a user-friendly solution.”
“We’d previously tried to implement tools where our clients would have to access another application, and it just never quite felt integrated within the business. People stopped using it, so it didn’t really add the value that we wanted.”
“With Slack, the legal team gets instant notifications when people are asking questions. It’s a really easy way for us to quickly review answers that have been generated for accuracy and add notes.”
“You might think, ‘Oh, well, are you not just doing the work that you’d otherwise have done previously?’ Well, no, because with the ongoing moderation process on Josef Q being so cool, the tools quickly learn so much, which is a really incredible process to watch.”
“It’s really important for our business that we don’t wait until a tool’s absolutely perfect to launch,” Nicola says.
For Fnatic, implementing AI tools “has been about:
“Obviously, if you’re in a different world and have a lot of external, consumer-facing work, you might want to look at it differently. But for us, we were like, get it out there, see it in action. That’s the best way for us to learn.”
The American Arbitration Association decided to build their own legal AI tool in-house, but after pressure-testing it against tools on Josef Q, President and CEO Bridget McCormack and Chief Innovation Officer Diana Didia chose to buy, not build.
