Securing top healthcare talent is trickier than ever.

For Advocare (one of the largest independent multi-specialty physician groups in the US), that means getting physicians and other healthcare professionals signing on the dotted line…fast. Automating their contracts is one way they’re tackling this head-on. But it’s not another just a workflow tweak. It’s a necessity.

In this fireside chat, Josef Co-Founder and COO, Sam Flynn, sits down with Advocare’s Vice President of Risk Management, Quality and Patient Safety, Jeremy Freshcorn.

Together, they talk about Jeremy’s career in healthcare, how Advocare is putting self-service contract tools to work on Josef, the future of onboarding, and how to move to quickly and safely in highly regulated environments.

From the ambulance to the boardroom

Jeremy began his career as a paramedic, and the skills he picked up in such high-stakes environments still shape how he leads today.

“The ability to meet people in crisis, to relate to them easily and gain trust” remains central to his approach.

Overall “it’s my job to be there to keep everybody from getting too out of control,” he says.

From risk insights to business outcomes

Jeremy explains that many clinicians underestimate their risk exposure simply because they can’t see it.

“Risk tolerance is very high, but it’s not intentional.” By helping teams articulate risk in practical terms, he’s able to shift behavior and support better decision-making.

Even in an automated world, personalized support remains critical.

“It’s important that we give people customized, individual solutions for their scenario.” For him, automated solutions free up time to deliver that deeper guidance where it matters most.

“This give us an opportunity to compete. We can get those agreements in somebody’s hands as soon as we’re ready to make an offer.”

Securing top talent with Josef

Advocare’s first project on Josef focuses on generating employment agreements for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

Why start with recruitment? Because, as Jeremy puts it, “in healthcare, it’s increasingly difficult.”

“Our care centers are competing with health systems with large employers. We found that it’s necessary to get contracts in people’s hands early which was a challenge using traditional methods.”

When an applicant receives a fully drafted agreement from one organization and only an offer letter from another, it makes a huge difference.  As Jeremy says: “They think, ‘Who is more serious here?’”

With automated contract tools the Advocare team are able to draft up tailored, state-specific agreements in minutes.

“We’re able to draft these employment agreements a lot faster. This gives us opportunity for us to compete. We can get those agreements in somebody’s hands as soon as we’re ready to make an offer.”

But what happens after signing?

Credentialing, privileging, insurance applications, and hospital access all require significant information gathering, and there’s no need for it all to be done manually.

“There’s a lot of information that goes out to these folks that they need to return to us,” Jeremy explains. “They’re filling out the same information on different applications. This is the opportunity for us to bring those into one place.

Centralizing intake is next up for the Advocare team and it’ll help route information to the right teams quickly and easily. “The sooner we can get this information in, the sooner we get them credentialed. It’s all very time-sensitive,” Jeremy says.

Adding, “The team that handles it all is very busy. This’ll let them concentrate more on direct communication and spend less time gathering the information that’s necessary to move these processes forward.”

“This is a great way to smooth the process out,” Jeremy says.

Let the data flow!

Advocare’s tech ecosystem spans everything from HR to payroll, credentialing, and operational systems. Tools like Josef offer the organization a way to connect them more thoughtfully.

As Jeremy explains: “Everybody knows their system. They may understand what somebody else does, but they don’t necessarily understand the connections between them. That’s the real key.”

His goal? Bridge silos, reduce context switching, and support cleaner data flow across the organization.

Why Advocare and Josef matched

Jeremy points to the platform’s user interface as well as Josef’s partnership model.

Speaking with Sam, he says, “Your team has a great set of experiences of similar situations we can draw from.”

“The platform’s user-friendly, and your team helps us understand where it can go.”

He also appreciates the reminders to keep things simple. “I have this tendency to overcomplicate things,” he says. “You have said at times: You need to be a little more direct and simpler. It was an aha moment for me!”

Jeremy’s take on AI

Jeremy sits on Advocare’s AI governance committee and sees one issue come up time and time again.

While many AI solutions have strong appeal, he says, “they’re not necessarily tailored to real business needs”. In healthcare, that alignment matters.

“We have to provide safe care. We have to protect the patient first, but also protect the organization and our providers.”

When it comes to adding AI to your tech stack, Jeremy’s advice is simple: make sure it solves real problems, don’t go adding any extra noise.
