What if contracting was easy end-to-end, and legal had more time for the more unique, trickier tasks?

That’s what Sara Rayment and Andrew Medlicott have focused on at INKD, a tech-led law firm, and Inkling Legal Design, its design-first sister company.

Using Josef, they’ve built self-service, AI contracting tools that help businesses draft, negotiate, send and sign contracts all without the usual, time-consuming back and forths.

The tools are already in use with clients like the healthcare provider Grampians Health, earning Inking Legal Design a finalist spot in the 2025 Financial Times Most Innovative Lawyer Awards. We’re so proud!

Josef Co-founder and CEO Tom Dreyfus sat down with the team to learn more about the tools, their thinking behind them, and what they see for the future of legal work.

Solving contracting’s biggest problem

“The number one frustration with contracts is negotiating the same points over and over again.” Andrew explains.

Using Josef, he and Sara’s team have created fully self-service workflows where business users can:

  • Draft contracts themselves
  • Counterparties can suggest edits via an AI-powered chat, and
  • If a change is within risk tolerance, the tool applies it automatically without pulling in a lawyer for help.

Andrew explains, “Business users can have a simple conversation through a chat-based interface, effectively with the document, and say, for example, ”Hey, I’d like to increase the liability category. I need some more protection around privacy.'”

“The counterparty can request changes like this and if they’re in line with our client’s risk appetite, the contract is automatically updated and sent out to the client.”

“We’re really taking out human intervention wherever we can.”

Prioritizing user experience

The key to making the tools tick? Prioritizing legal design, not just automation.

“You need to start with a really good, simple, user-friendly contract,” Andrew explains. And you need to have end-users in mind with every decision you make.

Sara adds: “We’re not only designing for our client. The important thing here is we’re designing for the end user as well.”

This can include procurement leads, salespeople, suppliers. Anyone who interacts with the contract! The result = tools that are easy to use, intuitive, and empower the whole business. Not just legal!

“Josef's so quick and versatile. I could walk into any room and get people using the technology straight away.”
– Sara Rayment, Founder & Managing Partner, Inkling Legal Design

Why Josef?

Sara and Andrew needed a platform that’d be easy to use and enable them (and their clients) to move fast. They wanted full control over the build too.

Sara explains, “We’ve worked with Josef for a long time because it’s a really easy tool to use.”

“In the past, we’ve taken it out of the box and provided it to people who’ve never built anything before, and in a one hour session, they’ve been able to build a tool all by themselves.”

“Josef’s so quick and versatile. I could walk into any room and get people using the technology straight away.”

Financial Times finalists

One of the team’s bespoke tools is already live with healthcare provider Grampians Health, where it’s speeding up procurement and helping internal teams get contracts over the line quickly.

It also landed the team as finalists at 2025 Financial Times Innovative Lawyer Awards for digital tools

Andrew says, “It’s quite humbling to see Grampians Health’s name listed amongst some really, really big, large global companies.”

Thinking of creating something similar?

Sara’s advice to other legal teams? “Just start by doing.”

Start small. Choose a simple, low-risk use case. Test it. Learn. Repeat. Sara adds, Be kind to yourself… You’re effectively learning a whole, new, different skill set.”

Andrew agrees, pointing to the opportunity for more lawyers (should they adopt new ways of working) to step into more active strategic roles.

“AI is going to empower lawyers to stop being the bottlenecks and start to be the drivers of growth.”

This is the kind of change we love to see!
